As the cohort embarks on their journey in high school, the GEAR UP department and partners have been working with the feeder high schools to ensure that services and interventions are in place and ready for access. In turn, the feeder high schools have selected key staff that will be the liasons between their sites and the partners to oversee GEAR UP program implementation. Thank you for allowing our Southwestern College Mentors and Tutors to be guests in your child's school in an effort to provide our Class of 2011 GEAR UP students the early awareness and readiness they will need to succeed in high school and beyond. Whether providing in-class assistance from our Tutors or giving one-on-one personal development from our Mentors; I look forward to our new task of working together to build new relationships over the next four years. The Class of 2011 is headed for a unique high school experience so let's encourage them to take advantage of the many services available for them. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let us discuss what is GEAR UP? GAINING EARLY AWARENESS AND READINESS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS (GEAR UP) is a federal grant that was awarded in the Fall of 2005 to the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) to promote college eligibility for all students for the Class of 2011. When the grant was awarded, students were in the 7th grade and enrolled at Castle Park Middle, Chula Vista Middle, Granger Junior High, Mar Vista Middle, Montgomery Middle, National City Middle, and Southwest Middle schools.
THE GOAL OF GEAR UP is to increase college readiness and enrollment without remediation for cohort students. Seven objectives have been identified in order to achieve this goal.
